7 Pakistani universities ranked among the top 1000 universities of the world

The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking is an annual ranking system that ranks the top 1000 universities of the world based on the quality of their education, employment rate, faculty/student ratio ,research abilities, quality and quantity of research and several other factors. This system is considered to be very efficient in judging the performance of universities all over the world and the rankings are well trusted.

The rankings are updated every year and the ranks of universities are revised by evaluating their overall performance. Several Pakistani Universities have managed to get a spot in the list over the past few years. The latest QS World University Ranking of 2021 includes seven Pakistani universities in the top 1000. 

The universities that made it to the top 1000 of QS world ranking are listed below:

  1. National University of Science and Technology (NUST),Islamabad (Rank: 355)

NUST achieves a QS ranking of 355 among the top 1000 global universities. Established in 1991 as an engineering college, the university now offers a wide list of disciplines for undergraduate and graduate degrees, including doctoral and professional degrees. It serves as a platform which provides a combination of careers such as Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology, Business Administration, Social and Management sciences. The university has known to establish a sound research platform for both local and international researchers. Latest modern equipment and technologies implemented in the laboratories have had a significant impact on the university’s performance over the past years. Moreover, along with academic excellence, the university offers a variety of extracurricular activities on campus. This is the first time since that 2012 that NUST has been ranked above 400.

2.Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) (Rank: 373)

Initially founded as a Reactor School for nuclear research purposes in 1967, the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences now ranks on 373rd position in the list of top 1000 universities. It was rated as the no.1 engineering university of Pakistan by the Higher education commission in 2017. The university achieved international recognition for its nuclear sciences related researches and STEM programs. It has the highest number of PhD holders in its faculty.  PIEAS offers bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees in the fields of Engineering, Physical and Life sciences. It has more postgraduate students than graduate students. The university has excellent research facilities and is considered as the top research institute in Pakistan. Its strength lies in focus on research and quality of teaching faculty. Due to high competition among students and excellent university ranking, only the passionate students can get admission in PIEAS.

3. Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad (Rank: 454)

The Quaid-i-Azam University was established in 1967 and initially offered postgraduate programs. It later expanded in 1980 to offer both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Located in the heart of Islamabad, The Quad-i-Azam University is set up on the Marglla hills and is one of the largest institutes in Islamabad. It is divided into four faculties and nine affiliated research institutes and is widely known for its excellence in researches. Maintaining high performance in the fields of Physics, Mathematics, Economics and Agriculture departments and research activities, the university achieved the 454th rank in the QS World University ranking of 2021. Along with Bachelor and Master degree programs, the university also offers a wide range of short-term training and diploma courses in various technical fields. Having such diverse course programs, the total enrollment exceeds 13000 students.

4. Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) (Rank: 651-700)

LUMS came into being in 1983 with the aim of establishing a world class university to produce excellent professionals. The university has now achieved a status of one of the leading universities of Pakistan. From the beginning, the university has continued to expand and introduced liberal arts undergraduate programs, humanities and social sciences, business education, engineering, and law studies The university has continuously strived hard for improvement throughout its life and managed to achieve 651-700 position in the QS world ranking this year. The faculty consists of 248 members, 75% of which have a doctorate degree. It is a relatively modern and an expensive institute set up in DHA, Lahore.

5. COMSATS University, Islamabad (Rank: 801-1000)

COMSATS is a young university established in 1994 and is competing to achieve a good position locally. It aims to succeed in effective teaching and learning, research and technology. Over the years, COMSTAS has succeeded in developing an impressing academic profile and succeeded in gaining international reorganization. It offers various field options such as Engineering, Business, Arts and Design, Agriculture, Humanities etc. With the main campus in Islamabad, there are other six campuses located in Abbottabad, Wah, Lahore, Attock, Sahiwal and Vehari. With continuous efforts towards success, COMSATS managed to secure 801-1000 rank in the global rankings.

6. University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore (Rank: 801-1000)

University of Engineering and Technology is one of the most historical institutes of Pakistan, located on the main Grand Trunk road, Lahore. It was founded in 1921, in the Mughal Empire and was initially named as Mughalpura Technical College. In 1923, it updated to MacLagan Engineering College and offered only Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.  By the time of independence 1947, the college was well established and offered main courses of Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering. It was again renamed as University of Engineering and Technology in 1972 and started offering a variety of disciplines like Mining engineering, Petroleum and Gas engineering, Chemical engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Architecture and Town Planning. The university now offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate degrees in all disciplines and ranked at 801-1000 position in the world ranking.

7. University of the Punjab, Lahore (Rank: 801-1000)

Located in Lahore, University of the Punjab is the oldest public university of Pakistan. The university has major contribution toward the education system of Pakistan since the beginning. It was established by the British government in the subcontinent in 1882. The university includes 83 academic departments , research centers and institutes with 45, 678 enrolled students. The university is well known for its advancement in the fields of Agriculture and Forestry, Physics and Astronomy and Chemistry. From the latest records, the university ranked 801-1000 in the world ranking.
