Tips to Get Over Procrastination

Procrastination typically involves putting off a less pleasurable but perhaps more crucial work in favor of something more pleasurable or easy. Several people fall into the procrastination trap. In fact, studies show that 95% of people procrastinate to a certain extent. While knowing you’re not the only one can be consoling, realizing how much it might restrict you can be disheartening.

We might become discouraged and frustrated with our life if we procrastinate for longer periods of time. Procrastination can cause complications and in extreme circumstances, loss of employment and relationships and grades.

Nowadays, due to lockdowns and restrictions, it has become extremely difficult for students to concentrate. Even those who are working at home cannnot segregate properly work and play modes. For all of those struggling with time-management and procrastination, we bring some tips on how to overcome procrastination.

Make a schedule:

The first step in trying to get over procrastination is making a schedule of your tasks. As you plan your task in an organized manner, it is more likely to be completed in a specific time. Unplanned things usually do not go that way.

First of all, understand the key aspects of your project or task in hand, divide it into smaller segments and do not forget to set the SMART goals technique. SMART goals stand for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-oriented as well.

Dividing a long task into some smaller ones will make the project more appealing and convenient to you. Usually, you delay your tasks when they seem a burden to you or you have a fear of doing mistakes. But as you divide a task into smaller ones, it will allow you to handle it in a more manageable way.

Develop a proper working environment:

The environment in which you work is the key factor to decide whether you will be able to focus on the goals you set or continue to delay them. Your surroundings must not contain the elements that may possibly make you distracted. Do not allow yourself to indulge in social media apps nor take unnecessary calls.

Also, avoid crowded places while working and do not sit near a television. Do not make yourself much cozy as well. For instance, if you are a student, a freelancer or an office worker, it is better for you to arrange a sitting table and chair instead of doing your tasks sitting in a comfortable couch. It will prevent you from falling asleep while working.

Focus:

Avoid multitasking as well because it will impact the quality of your work. Make sure that you focus on one task at hand instead of multiple ones simultaneously. Several researchers have proved that doing one task at a time is more productive as compared to multi-tasking.

Before getting started, ensure that you have had proper sleep and are not hungry. Otherwise, you will continue to distract yourself during work. You may take a short break if you feel overwhelmed but once you get to start, you must be proactive and full attention must be towards a single task. A surrounding, free of unpleasant noises will also help you to put all of your focus on the task you aim to accomplish.

Learn from your mistakes:

“Learn from your mistakes” is a common proverb you may have come across many times. It happens sometimes that you besides taking all the necessary measures are not succeeding in getting over your habit of delaying important things. In that case, you need to find out the areas where you are lacking and work on them.

Secondly, to get over this, you must have to keep a check on yourself. Track where your time goes using a time-tracker. Also, seek help and support to analyze your time-spending habits. It may be anyone including your friend, sibling, or even a coach. All you need usually is a time-to-time reminder of the deadlines so you may get a realization of how precious your time is.

Prioritize most difficult tasks:

Our circadian rhythm, which governs our regular internal clock, ensures that we are most vigilant around 10 a.m. before experiencing a mid-afternoon drop. The more difficult the work, the more energy and effort we will therefore need to achieve it.

As a consequence, it makes sense to allow yourself to start with the most complicated and challenging things first, because starting them when weary is rather tough, and many people have to put them off for the next day as a result. Completing the difficult tasks first will also give you the confidence and energy to move forward for the next ones

To quit the habit of delaying things is not that easy when you have so many things going around you. But keep it in mind that it’s only you who can change yourself as no one else will do it for you.
